Betelgeuse
for Violin, Cello and Piano
Betelgeuse is a star in the constellation of Orion, also known as Alpha Orionis. It is one of the brightest stars, and its diameter is approximately 1900 to 2400 times larger than our Sun. This red supergiant star is currently in a late stage of stellar evolution, and in the relatively near future (on an astronomical scale) will explode as a supernova. Supernova explosions are the main mechanism through which all elements heavier than oxygen spread across space and practically the only source of elements heavier than iron (made in a natural way). These elements enrich clouds of matter, which is where new stars form.
Existence that comes to an end. The end that forms a beginning... These are the issues which inspired me to write this work. It is in one movement, but comprises four phases, which symbolize the
process through which stars are ‘born’ and then ‘die’. This process is cyclical, so the end of the work refers with its material to the initial phase of the composition.
