Two Pictures without an Exhibition
for Percussion, Cello and Piano
''Two Pictures Without an Exhibition'' for cello, percussion and piano was written early in 1996 on the occasion of the sixtieth birthday of Marek Stachowski under whom I studied composition. It would be a mistake to detect any concurrence between the title of my work and Modest Musorgsky's cycle. The two successive ''Pictures'' are characterised by contrast of tempos, textures, dynamics and expression. In the first of them (''Reflected Life with Cry'') I used inversion, determining the choice of harmonies, and a polarised texture. The second picture (''Melody in White on Glass'') was constructed of a number of diatonic sixths as a background to the melody. The world premiere of the ''Two Pictures Without an Exhibition'' took place in April 1996 during a jubilee concert for Marek Stachowski in the ''Florianka'' concert hall of the Academy of Music in Cracow.
