The symphonic poem Blood was was written at a particular time, the end of the century and millennium. Mykietyn, characteristically for him, flirts with the past in a postmodern way, giving traditional elements a new, often paradoxical face. The snatched, dissociated texture of the music does not seem to fit the commonly accepted understanding of the romantic genre. It is extremely expressive and suggestive, evoking associations with restless modernity. It obsessively repeats a six note motive; biting unsuccessfully again and again against a quasi-tonal passage, it irritates and worries, even when it is presented by the celesta. A similar impression is created by the multi-layered ostinata - spread out over long spaces of tiny repetitions, though the motive is easily memorable. Instead of momentum and fluent eloquence, which we know from the poems of Liszt and Strauss, Blood is formed apparently disconnectedly - apparently, because the music was very carefully constructed. The composer provokes reflection on our crazy world, giving his original illustration. At its centre are human ills and obsessions, fears and frustrations. The music of Blood is far from dreams and imaginings - it is firmly rooted in temporal reality.
