The premiere of the opera ''Marcin's Wife from Dunaj in the Seraglio in Istanbul'' to a libretto by W. Pękalski took place at the National Theatre in Warsaw on 20 March 1812. This three-act comedy-opera did not enjoy great success. Only the libretto and the manuscript of the overture are extant. Kurpiński set much store by the overture, contributing to its publication as a piano reduction by Walenty Kratzer. In 1998 the Cracow composer Tadeusz Machl transcribed the overture for piano duet and this version is presented here. The overture in question is based on a freely treated sonata form scheme. While drawing on the musical means characteristic of the works of Haydn and Mozart, the composer expanded upon them by introducing a Polish dance theme - that of a mazurka. In the development section he employed a fugato instead of the thematic work characteristic of this section of sonata allegro.
