Gombrowicz's drama is ambiguous, characters and their actions can be read in a variety of ways, which leaves scope for interpretation. In opera, music takes on the role of interpreter. I thus had plenty of possibilities for shaping situations and characters.I chise the simplest: not to interpret at all, but to represent through music each of the characters in the most literal, the simplest way, adhering faithfully to the written word, according to my understanding of that word and the situation. I chose this route, because I believe in the power of the classical structure of Gombrowicz's play. I also hope that by adopting this approach I was able to create a clear pisture of each character and give more scope to the director and the singers. Artificiality, present in the theatre version of ''Yvonne'', is clearly brought out in the operatic form. The genre of opera is, after all, artificiality itself. As a result of these two artificialities overlaying each other, something is creatied which reshapes the original theatre drama into an opera which is completely independent of it. [Z.
