This composition was written in England in 1938 in response to a commission from Kurt Joos - a German choreographer. In 1944 a version of the Berceuse for piano and orchestra was written and, together with an Allegro concertante, it makes up a diptych often performed today as a whole. In concert programmes it is often referred as a Piano Concerto. Perfect affinity for the instrument, which Maciejewski - himself a pianist - possessed in the highest degree, is the reason why both performers and listeners will enjoy his piano compositions.
