Songs of Sappho is a cycle of five miniature pieces inspired by the verse of this ancient Greek poetess and songstress. The selected fragments of poems by Sappho are of an impressionistic character, illustrating fleeting impressions at a specific time of day and acting on various senses. The same applies to these miniatures, where an important role is played by colouring and subtlety.
The flute harmonises wonderfully with the violin, viola and cello – forces that enable the musicians to generate a wealth of sonorities and colours and allow for exceptionally rich expression. The different movements of the work display a wide range of expression and colors. The flute and the string instruments bring out the virtuosic character of these miniatures.
The text of the selected fragments of the Songs is appended to the score. During the performance, my recommendation is to recite the text of Sappho’s poems before each movement.
