In November 2001 we celebrated Mieczysław Tomaszewski's 80th birthday. My congratulations at that time were accompanied by a one-movement composition for string quartet, suitably entitled for the occasion, Felicitamente. In accordance with my earlier intention the work became the second movement of the Fourth String Quartet. The opening Andante risoluto is a material and textural exposition, the particular motifs of which are developed in the remaining movements of the work. The second movement Larghetto con sentimento is the above-mentioned occasional piece, which led to the entire quartet. The title Felicitamente was removed, instead of which the whole quartet was dedicated to Mieczysław Tomaszewski.The next movement Vivace con fuoco does not claim to pretend to be a scherzo in the conventional sonata structure. It forms a stringent expressive contrast with the neighbouring movements and aims at discharging the expressive tensions of the second movement, while forming a bridge to the last movement. The quartet is closed by a Lento dolente - a kind of expressive summiary of the whole composition. [Marek Stachowski]
