Suite
for 4 Trombones
Serocki forged his Suite for four trombones from seven quite short movements alternating quick and slow tempi (as in Renaissance and Baroque suites). An Intrada referring to the early Baroque canzona, based on a lively rhythm and distinctive melody, is followed by a nostalgic Canon with a strictly imitated theme (at a minor third and a fifth) in the top three parts and a bottom part presenting its rhythmically augmented inversion. The central part of the Suite comprises a charmingly simple, homophonic and long-breathed Chorale, no doubt deliberately referring to the tradition of Beethoven’s ‘equali’ – all the parts in it are ‘equal’. The Chorale is sandwiched between an Interlude and an Intermezzo – movements played in a constant staccato, of a light and humorous character. The penultimate movement of the Suite is a dignified, archaic Arietta, which imitates the sound of tolling bells and employs a subtle echo effect. The work then closes with a breakneck, highly virtuosic Toccatina.
