This work was composed to a commission from the director of the Yanagawa Shimin Bunka Kaikan in Japan. The city of Yanagawa lies in the Fukuoka prefecture on the third largest island of Japan, Kiusiu. It was the birthplace of the poet and author of songs for children Hakushū Kitahara (1885–1942). Each year, on the anniversary of his death, a three-day festival is held in Yanagawa, with readings of Kitahara’s poetry, firework displays, performances by music ensembles and evening boat trips. One of Kitahara’s best known and loved works is Karatachi no Hana[The Karatachi orange flowers]. This poem was made popular by the renowned Japanese composer Kōsaku Yamada (1886–1965). In my composition, I wanted to convey the atmosphere of Kitahara’s work. I have also quoted and rearranged the first line of the song: Karatachi no hana ga saita yo [The karatachi orange flowers are in bloom].
