A Winter's Tale (La novella d'inverno)
for Strings
La novella dinverno (A Winters Tale) was written in 1984 in Bloomington for the Polish Chamber Orchestra, and is dedicated to its chief, Jerzy Maksymiuk. The works world premiere took place on 5 May 1985 in Lisbon, as part of the 9th Festival of Contemporary Music organized by the Gulbenkian Foundation. Since that time, the work has also been performed in, among other places, England, France, Canada, Italy and the USA (at Carnegie Hall in New York). In the surrealist painting of Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy or Giorgio de Chirico, elements of the real world are mixed with the irrational world in such a way that the result is a picture which is a new, superior and surreal reality. In La novella dinverno, I made an attempt to create such a new, surreal sound picture. This sound world is build of known elements (in this case, Vivaldi), transformed and composed into a whole so that the result is a new and superior sound reality.
