Five Pieces
Op. 13 for 2 Pianos
Five Pieces for two pianos reveals the composer's move towards the German, French and Italian serial traditions. Górecki's attention was especially attracted by the radical shape of the twelve-note series handled in the form of pointillistic textures. In this work the series, beside the pitches (where the series is observed in the most rigorous way) affects also the other parametres of the work: dynamics, rhythmics and registers. Each of the five works has its own peculiar characteristic, e.g. I acts as an ''exposition'' for the remaining compositions, containing the full twelve-note series, II possesses short mirror structures (pitch palindromes), IV is marked by fixed-range clusters, while V - the most elaborately worked out (2 parts) piece - presents different kinds of series and sub-series.
